About

Mark Unger is a National Geographic Explorer and Science Photographer based in Berkeley, California. He is currently on staff at WonderLab where he uses photography to reveal unseen secrets of the natural world.

His biological inquiries have shaped his belief that science is not a distant institution but a natural human impulse — curiosity made visible.

Unger’s work has taken him from the cloud forests of Monteverde, to the research laboratories of Jyväskylä, Finland. His work has appeared in documentary film and academic publications.

He sees the camera as a tool for expanding what we can perceive together — and his research is an invitation to look closely at a world that rewards curiosity and expands the boundaries of our perception.
